Cambodia: Promoting sustainable development

I travelled to Cambodia to reaffirm our commitment to assist in achieving a sustainable way of development.

Cambodia has witnessed steady and rapid economic growth over the past decade, amongst the highest in South east Asia. While economic development has improved the livelihoods of the people, the importance of considering environmental protection and conservation during this development stage is crucial. In a meeting with the Minister of Environment and the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation I learned about the country’s needs, challenges and priorities on environmental issues.

The importance of plastics and waste management, renewable energy, clean mobility, and biodiversity conservation were highlighted. In concrete measures, UN Environment will provide support to Cambodia in identifying measures to reduce the deforestation rate, strengthen biodiversity conservation and develop eco-tourism.
