Congo: Partnering to protect peatlands

At the third meeting of partners to the Global Peatlands Initiative, in Brazzaville; several countries which are home to large tracts of peatlands came together to share experiences.

I attended the third meeting of partners to the Global Peatlands Initiative, in Brazzaville. The Meeting brought together Ministers from the Republic of Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo and Indonesia to share and learn from their experience in terms of managing and ensure a sustainable exploitation of the peatlands. The conference was supported by UN Environment as part of our broader mandate to support biodiversity management, natural capital, and ensure protection and sustainable use of ecosystems.

The conference ended with the signing of the Brazzaville Declaration, a very important step by the Republic of Congo and the Democratic Republic of Congo Governments to protect the Congo Basin Peatlands. The participation and support of Indonesian Minister of Environment and Forest was critical because the country has so much experience in fighting peatland fires and protecting this important asset to the planet. UN Environment looks forward to supporting greater south-south cooperation to tackle issues affecting the Congo basin peatlands.
