Ecosystems and Human Well-being: Conducting and Using Integrated Assessments. A Training Manual.
English, Français, Português

This training module is an introduction to the basic concepts and approaches of integrated ecosystem assessments. Integrated ecosystem assessments focus on ecosystem services (the benefits people obtain from ecosystems, like food, water, and climate regulation), how changes in these services have affected human well-being and how such changes may affect people in the future. They also focus on the responses that might be adopted to improve ecosystem management and contribute to human well-being and alleviate poverty.

The module is based on the conceptual framework of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MA) and draws extensively on the experiences of the Southern African Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (SAfMA), one of the key sub-global assessments of the MA process.

Exploring the Links is a conceptual framework developed in collaboration with the International Institute for Sustainable Development as a contribution to understanding about the linkages between poverty and the environment. Exploring the Links outlines UNEP's approach to the poverty-environment nexus and offers new insight into the complex relationship between poverty and the environment. It does so by drawing upon the capabilities approach and the ecosystems approach and emphasizes empowerment of poor people.
