Building the Foundations for Sustainable Nutrient Management

Nutrients, such as nitrogen and phosphorous, are a key part of delivering food security and sustainable development. However, excess use and inefficient practices leads to nutrient overenrichment, causing soil acidification and groundwater pollution, harmful algal blooms and dead zones in the sea, and loss of coral and sea grass cover. There will be a growing cost to countries in terms of the degradation of valuable natural resources and the services and jobs they provide. This booklet focuses on the use and effect of two key nutrients - nitrogen and phosphorous. 'Building the Foundations for Sustainable Nutrient Management' is a crosscutting contribution to sustainable development and global advocacy for productive discussion and action by countries and their stakeholders.
