West Asia

YouthXchange partners in West Asia have implemented awareness-raising and capacity-building activities on sustainable consumption through the YouthXchange Initiative in a number of ways. Here are some examples:

YouthXchange in the Mediterranean

The YouthXchange in the Mediterranean (YXC-med) project was a 24 month long programme carried out by the Mediterranean Information Office for Environment, Culture and Sustainable Development (MIO-ECSDE) / Mediterranean Education Initiative for Environment & Sustainability (MEdIES) during the period 2009 - 2011. The YXC-med programme addresses the critical issue of sustainability in the lifestyles of young people of the Mediterranean particularly in terms of consumption habits. Based on an existing worldwide initiative of UNEP & UNESCO (http://www.youthxchange.net), this initiative specifically targets the young people of the Mediterranean region.

The YXC printed kit (already existing in 21 languages) was translated to Arabic, enriched with Mediterranean-relevant case studies, re-produced and circulated to Arabic speaking countries of the region, namely, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Syria and Tunisia. A series of trainings is foreseen in order to train educators on how to integrate the YXC-med kit in their teaching. This project was coordinated by the MIO-ECSDE/ (MEdiES) and the local and national partners, with the support of the Anna Lindh Foundation and UNEP.

YXC-med involved the following West Asian countries:

Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates: Each country used the YouthXchange training kit on responsible consumption in Arabic, which they contributed to in terms of its development, as a key tool in educating young people and the general public on sustainable consumption. This involved developing media partnerships with several national newspapers that included weekly columns on sustainable consumption/YouthXchange as well as clean up campaigns and school campaigns on environmental education. Countries were involved in conducting educational outreach and capacity-building activities in formal and informal education sectors targeting public school teachers, youth leaders and government officials.
