The long-term objective of the community outreach is informing, educating and mobilising the key stakeholders in Nairobi to change their attitudes and behaviour towards the Nairobi rivers, develop values for the sustainable management and use of the Nairobi rivers, and to learn to make informed and appropriate decisions concerning the sustainable use of the rivers and its resources.
Short-term objectives include:

Raising public awareness on waste minimisation, recycling and management;

Seeking simple, tangible and visibly-impacting results for the urban dwellers (informal settlements) situated along the rivers;

Enhancing the establishment of a network of information services on Nairobi rivers, leading to sustainable forms of river management;

Offering informal training to school and community volunteers on water quality by application of simple techniques;

Creating a national media focus on potential water pollutants and health hazards among the local people and policy makers alike;

Sharing the information and experience of organisations involved in the clean-up of the rivers with other interested organisations;

Developing information and training materials about the Nairobi rivers and promoting better utilisation of untapped or partly tapped resources within the private sector and communities.
Activities to be considered would be in the areas of education and public information, special events and competitions, improved health and environmental demonstrations and training for trainers. Outputs expected would be community awareness, shared goals amongst stakeholders, improved management and recommended future courses of action.
Stakeholder Capacity Building
The stakeholders Action 2000 meeting was held in Nairobi at the National Museums of Kenya on 14 March 2000.
The meeting’s objective was to:
- Create awareness among stakeholders on the nature and extent of pollution in the Nairobi River Basin;
- To get their commitment to participate in the project;
- To prepare realistic action plans aimed at reversing the pollution trend in the river basin.
Participants at the workshop included representatives of NGO’s, the private sector, industrialists, the mass media, Government departments, educational institutions, the Nairobi City Council, UNEP and UNCHS (Habitat).
