The Joint meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Abidjan and Nairobi Conventions on the Protection and Development of the Marine and Coastal Environment of the West and Central African Region (Abidjan Convention) and the Eastern African Region (Nairobi Convention) respectively, will be held at held at the Indaba Hotel & Conference Centre at Sandton - Johannesburg, South Africa from 5 – 8 November 2007.
The theme of the Joint COPs is ‘Building on Success’, focusing on the progress and successes achieved by governments, key partners and stakeholders towards the implementation of the objectives of the two Conventions. The COPs offer participants an opportunity to further the ongoing process of increased pan-African integration and cooperation by facilitating sharing of experiences and ideas. The Joint COPs will focus on ecosystems-based management approaches, especially in the context of the connection between land and sea. Other thematic areas to be discussed during the Conferences include: oil and gas exploration and exploitation; strategic environmental assessments; implementation of article 76 of the Law of the Sea; climate change adaptations and mitigation; sustainable financing; and enhanced visibility for the Conventions.
