UNEP Regional Children's Conference for Africa

The First African Regional Children’s Conference took place in Cameroon from 30th July to 2nd August 2007. The conference brought together over 300 children from all parts of Africa and Norway, to learn about and voice their concern for the environment under the theme “Practice What You Preach”.

It was co- organized by the Ministry of Environment and Nature Protection in Cameroon and UNEP, in collaboration with UNDP, UNICEF and UNESCO and also intended to prepare the children for the Tunza International Children’s Conference that will take place in Norway in June 2008.

Certain issues that each child could identify with, were tabled for discussion at the Cameroon Conference.

The main themes of discussion were:

  • Climate change and food security;
  • Forest and biodiversity (including a visit to a forest), and the
    Survival of the Great Apes;
  • Water (clean water and sanitation, situation in slums and other poor areas due to the lack of water and sanitation);
  • Waste management and recycling;
  • Dry lands and Deserts ( including information on The Billion Tree Campaign )
