Climate Change in Kenya

The United Nations General Assembly has mandated UNEP to provide leadership in addressing issues surrounding climate change. Kenya is an example of a developing country, which has been affected by the impacts and effects of this global phenomenon.

Erratic weather patterns characterized by devastating floods and cycles of droughts have become more frequent with increasing intensity. Economic losses due to this environmental vulnerability have been estimated to cost up to 40% of the national GDP.

The national debate on climate change has been slow in taking shape in Kenya. Nevertheless, national climate change adaptation and response strategy has been developed.

Currently UNEP Kenya Country Programme is in consultations with the Kenya Government to support the process of developing a climate Change Policy. UNEP is also developing several Climate Change projects for Kenya on adaptation and mitigation.
