MB is used at a rate of 100kg per year for QPS purposes
In the past, Mauritius used 0.45 ODP tons of MB for the fumigation of a flour mill (Les Moulins de la Concorde Ltee). The flour mill has been using methyl bromide to the tune of 700kg/year as from 1998.; the operation is carried out only once a year. However, in order to comply with its obligations under the Montreal Protocol, it banned the import of MB into the country in 2001. This situation, however, created a significant problem with the flour mill, which switched to phosphine with negative results as phosphine was affecting electronic components of the mill. The flour mill asked the government to request an essntial use exemption for fumigation purposes.
