World Environment Day (WED) is the United Nations flagship environmental event, celebrated each year on 5 June. The United Nations General Assembly established the World Environment Day in 1972 to mark the opening of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment. The purpose of World Environment Day is to focus worldwide attention onto the importance of the environment and stimulate political attention and action.
The World Environment Day theme selected for 2007 was Melting Ice – A hot Topic? The theme focuses on the effects of climate change. In Kenya, it is getting warmer and affecting freshwater supplies due to changed patterns of rainfall with consequences for food production and human health. There is increasing desertification, drought and food insecurity.
