The environment initiative of the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD) was launched at the inaugural meeting of the Implementation Committee of Heads of State and Government held in Abuja, Nigeria, on 23 October 2001. The goal of the initiative is to reduce poverty and environmental degradation and thereby ensure sustainable development on the African continent.The 9th session of AMCEN,held in Kampala, Uganda in July 2002, endorsed the Framework of the Action Plan for the Environment Initiative of the New Partnership for Africa's Development. At the 8th session of AMCEN, the Ministers decided that an Africa Environment Outlook (AEO) Report should be prepared to provide a comprehensive scientific assessment of the environment, policies, and environmental management programmes in Africa. The report was launched during the 9th session of AMCEN and was lauded as the flagship on the State of Africa's Environment. ( More )
