UNEP - Regional Office for Asia Pacific - Internship FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

• Can I get financial support from the United Nations (UN)?
The United Nations does NOT provide financial support for interns. All successful applicants are expected to make their own arrangements for travel and living expenses during the internship period.

• Will I be employed at the UN at the end of my internship?
Unfortunately NO. Acceptance for internship is in no way tied to recruitment and selection for employment at the UN, and there should be no expectancy of such. Vacancies to be filled are advertised separately and selection is done competitively from all parts of the world. Even if there were a vacancy, please be advised that interns are not eligible for employment during the period of the internship and the six months following the end of the internship.

• Will my internship increase my chances of employment at the UN?
Some UN organizations may be more inclined to accept candidates who have UN experience, but that is not necessarily a decisive factor in recruitment.

• Will the UN help me to find accommodation during stay in Thailand?
Unfortunately NO. Interns are fully responsible for their travel and accommodation arrangements. The best the internship office can do is to link you to present interns/assistans who can assist find suitable accommodation.

• Should I arrange an interview?
If the UN wants to interview you, either in person or by phone, we shall contact you. Please do not call us. Telephone interviews with interns outside Thailand are rare.

• Will the United Nations guarantee my security during the period of the internship?
Interns are extended the same facilities as UN staff by UN Security service. However, as with any country, there is no guarantee of total security.

• Do I need to be at the office full-time?
Yes. Interns are treated like other full time employees. You will be required to work from 8.00 am to 5.00 p.m. Depending on the needs of your office, particularly when preparing for conferences, longer working hours may be necessary.

• Can either party terminate the internship?
Yes, either party can terminate the internship by giving the other one-week’s notice. The UN can terminate the internship if it is established that an intern is involved in inappropriate conduct.
