Area(s) of Expertise: Mr. Stefanos Fotiou moved to Bangkok after serving 3 years in the UNEP/DTIE office in Paris as coordinator of the "Tourism and Environment" Programme. In his current tasks Mr. Fotiou is coordinating the activities of the UNEP Division of Technology, industry and Economics for the Asia Pacific Region. He is focusing on the priorities of Resource Efficiency and Sustainable Consumption and Production and he is the regional focal point for the UNEP work on Green Economy. When he joined UNEP in the beginning of 2006, he brought with him a wealth of experience on sustainable development and natural resource economics. Before joining UNEP, Mr. Fotiou has worked as a consultant for governments and the industry on issues related to sustainable regional development. He has also worked as an evaluation and monitoring expert for the Environment General Directorate of the European Commission, as head of the Sustainable Development unit of the Greek Biotope Wetland Centre, as well as a research associate in the Aristotle University. Mr. Fotiou has managed a number of international projects dealing with sustainable development with a total budget of more than US$ 100 million. He has been involved as a leading expert in the development of national, regional and sectoral strategies related to sustainable development and he has published scientific papers, monographs and a number of articles on sustainable development, economics of the environment, information economics and natural resource management. He also has extensive experience as an educator; he has taught as a visiting lecture for 6 years in the Department of Planning and Management of Natural Resources at the Aristotle University and in the Department of Business Administration at the University of Macedonia. He is currently a member in the Editorial Board of the Journal of Coastal Management (Elsevier publisher) and a reviewer in various scientific journals. He holds a University Diploma in Forestry, a PhD in Environmental Resource Economics a Master in Information Systems and post-graduate certificates in “Economics of Technological and Institutional Change”, “GIS and Remote Sensing”, “Non-linear analysis” “Agro-business Management and Marketing” and “Total Quality Management”.
