Ms. Wanhua Yang joined UNEP ROAP in October 2007 as a Legal Officer outposted by the Division of Environmental Law and Conventions. Her main areas of work include providing legal assistance in response to governments’ requests to strengthen environmental legislation and institutional regimes; organizing training and capacity building activities in environmental law, including compliance and enforcement of environmental law and multilateral environmental agreements at regional, sub-regional and national levels; and promoting the development of regional and sub-regional legal instruments. Before joining UNEP, she worked with the Canada-based International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD), managing its China Programme and coordinating a high-level international advisory group dealing with the relationship between WTO rules, MEAs and national environmental law under the China Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development. Before IISD, she worked for environmental institutions under central and local governments in China. She holds a Doctor of Juridical Science and a Master of Law (LL.M) in environmental law from Indiana University Law School in the United States. She also holds a LL.M in environmental law from China University of Political Science and Law.
