Support to Biodiversity-Related Multilateral Environmental Agreements

UNEP has a rich history of assisting governments in obtaining environmental information for decision-making, enhancing global and regional environmental cooperation, developing and applying national and international environmental law, advancing national and regional implementation of environmental objectives, and bridging major groups and governments in policy development and implementation processes.  In the area of biodiversity and ecosystems, UNEP administers three major Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs):

UNEP is currently undertaking a consultative process on reform of the International Environmental Governance to identify pathways to improve the complex and fractured system of MEAs, including the biodiversity-related MEAs. This is undertaken in consultation with other biodiversity processes such as the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, UNESCO World Heritage Convention, and the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resource for Food and Agriculture. A current focus includes, among others, regional and sub-regional support for the coordination of regional strategy on Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS), National Reporting, and Liability & Redress issues of the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety.
