Decision-making that promotes sustainable development requires a sound understanding of the complex relationship between the environment and social and economic development.
In Asia and the Pacific, UNEP contributes to bridging the gaps in scientific knowledge and understanding of underlying causes and impact of environmental change, along with policy options for responding to change. UNEP provides the following core services.
- Undertake policy-oriented scientific assessments
- Strengthen regional and national capacities for state of the environment reporting.
- Improve access to environmental data and information
In carrying out these functions UNEP works closely with a number of partners and collaborating centres in the region and has established functional networks for data, information, assessment and capacity development.
