Many environmental problems are regional and sub-regional. These problems could be solved with concerted effort and at lower costs through cooperation among countries in a given region or sub-region. In Asia Pacific, UNEP works with countries to develop sub-regional instruments to address environmental concerns that are transboundary in nature.
UNEP supported the development of the Framework Convention on Environment for Sustainable Development of Central Asia. The Convention was adopted by five Central Asia countries, namely Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.
UNEP is also working with in other subregions to develop these instruments.
