UNEP - Regional Office for Asia Pacific - Support for Multilateral Environmental Agreements

The development of multilateral environmental agreements (MEAs) over the last three decades has been the most tangible and concrete measure of success and advancement of international environmental law. However, the implementation of these agreements has been less successful and there has been a growing need to enhance synergies and inter-linkages of various MEAs.

UNEP’s Division of Environmental Law and Conventions has now focused on strengthening inter-linkages and synergies of MEAs and the development and implementation of a systematic approach for coordination among MEAs, and supporting MEA secretariats including support from regional offices.

In Asia-Pacific, two MEAs officers,  one focusing on biodiversity MEAs and the other focusing on chemical MEAs, work with governments in the region on effective implementation of MEAs.
