The ECCO project strengthens the capacity of national governments to carry out vulnerability and impact assessments for adaptation to climate change. A global methodology has been developed, peer reviewed and tested in collaboration with International Institute of Sustainable Development (IISD) and United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) to undertake these assessments at sub-regional and national level. The methodology follows the Integrated Environment Assessment framework and is based on IPCC guidelines. The aim is to integrate the concepts of vulnerability, impact and risk to produce sustainable adaptation options in line with national development pathways.
Vulnerability and impacts assessments for adaptation training and technical assistance have been provided to Pakistan and the Pacific countries for sub-regional assessments in collaboration with sub-regional organizations, research centres and universities. In Asia and the Pacific, national assessments are planned for Bangladesh, DP Korea, Pakistan and Pacific Region for the 2010-2011.
