Shruti Neelakantan

 

Shruti Neelakantan, from India was elected as part of the Tunza Youth Advisory Council of UNEP during this year’s International Children Conference in Bandung Indonesia , as regional representatives for Latin America Africa.

 

Shruti a Jornalism student at M.O.P. Vaishnav College for Women, Chennai, is also the International Climate Champion selected by the British Council. She has been researching and working towards mitigating climate change for five years and has been able to experience effect of climate change first hand since she has been able to visit the Arctic region, the Alps and witnessing the melting of glaciers and other environmental changes.

 

Shruti has also been able to take part in conferences on environment as well as organizing for Eco-kids camp for children for purposes of creating awareness on environmental concerns. Her dream project entails adopting a village and transforming it to an environment friendly model village.

Gracia Paramitha

 

Gracia Paramitha is a graduate of International Relations from Airlangga University, Surabaya. She is 22 years old and currently working in Ministry of Environment, as the staff of Bureau for Planning and International Cooperation.

 

Gracia has served as Princess of Environment from Tunas Hijau Club, local environmental organization in Surabaya. She has also taken part in garbage management in schools, training about environmental habit, and making green spaces with local government. She also took part in the organization of ECO-tainment, combining environmental issues and entertainment for children and youths during the World Environment Day, in June, 2009.

 

Gracia was also chosen as a Climate Champion by British Council where she took part in climate education programme. In December 2009, she participated in UNFCCC, COP 15 as a young Indonesian delegate in Copenhagen. Besides these, she likes singing, reading books, writing articles, and lecturing or sharing information.

Jessie James is the outgoing Global Tunza Youth Advisor and also the youth adviser of the Asia Pacific Youth Environmental Network, South East Asia Youth Environmental Network, Philippine Youth Environmental Network, and the Executive Director of Earth Talk. He is a member of the Boy Scouts of the Philippines (BSP) and Bayer Young Environmental Envoy (BYEE)- Philippines, whom he helps to implement environmental protection activities among the people living in the country. Hence, he has organized tree planting campaign, information and educational drive on climate change, and youth forum, not just locally but internationally. He is active in creating more youth networks in the local, national, and international level. He is also involve in climate negotiations under UNFCCC.

Jessie James graduated college last 2007 with a Bachelor's degree in Communication Arts at the University of the Immaculate Conception. He is now currently studying at the University of Mindanao taking up Law.

He wants to be involved in the formation of an effective network in order to work hand in hand with other countries especially in the implementation of the environmental projects toward sustainable development.

Edge, as he fondly called by his friends and colleagues, finished his Bachelors degree in Broadcasting at West Visayas State University (WVSU) and is currently taking his second course in Bachelors in Supplementary-Secondary Education at University of Perpetual Help Dalta-System. He was the former station manager and radio announcer of WVSU’s Radio Station DYWV Radio West Visayas. Edge is an active member of Bayer Young Environmental Envoy (BYEE) and Broadcast Guild (BG), whom he helps to implement environmental projects and programs in partnership with Local Government Units and NGO’s. Hence, he has pioneered a school based environmental radio program, tree planting activity, youth forums, information and education drives in his school and community. During his leisure time Edge likes to play football and basketball and loves to paint nature artworks.

Belal is involved in tree plantation initiatives in rural areas of Bangladesh. He is especially active in social forestry and awareness program in schools, colleges, among university students. Belal also leads advocacy actions to influence policy among government officials through seminars, workshops, organization of rallies and celebrating international environment days. Belal also carries out outreach to media, working with young environmental journalists in Bangladesh.

Yekaterina is the National Operator of Young Reporters for the Environment International Programme run by Foundation for the Environmental Education (FEE). She holds workshops and trainings on environmental journalism for students and assists in publishing the youth environmental magazine, Me and Earth. Yekaterina is also a coordinator of “Another Generation for the Environment/AGE” training centre for high school students. She works to improve public awareness and responsibility for the environment. She enjoys meeting new people, instrumental music and camping.

Svetlana Unru is from Tajikistan. She is currently working as the assistant of the SPARE project (School project on application of resources and energy) within the organization, Little Earth. The project focuses on low cost energy saving measures and the promotion of renewable energy sources. It involves schoolchildren and teachers across the country. Recently she was selected as the national coordinator for the newly established Tajikistan Youth Environmental Network (TAYEN). Aylara successfully graduated from the American University in Central Asia in the field of Business Administration. She currently works as a financial assistant at Chevron Nebitgaz in Turkmenistan. She is the focal point of the company for events that relate to supporting environmental awareness. In addition, Aylara is an active member of the Turkmenistan Youth Environment Network and Central Asian Youth Environment Network. She initiates, develops, and leads ecological events for Turkmenistan’s children and young teenagers. Aylara led events, including making seminars and ecological actions, and planting trees in order to commit youth to share responsibility of surrounding nature. Ith is a senior at Cambodian Mekong University majoring in English for business. She is also studying for a bachelor’s degree in Accounting and Finance at Phreah Kossomak Polytechnic Institute. Her academic success is illustrated by being named an outstanding student for every semester. She won 5th place in the Best Speaker contest at Cambodian Mekong University in 2009. Moreover, she was accepted to join the International Youth Exchange of Youth Partners in Development 2010 Program between Cambodia, Sweden, and Zambia for 6 months. She has attended many workshops and training courses, such as personal development, leadership, and philosophy. Nizar is from Indonesia representing his organization - International Forestry Students’ Association Local Committee Bogor Agricultural University (IFSA LC-IPB). He is the 2011 Director of IFSA LC-IPB. In addition, he is a forestry student in Bogor Agricultural University studying Forest Management and Landscape Architecture. He is actively involved in many Youth and Sustainable Development projects. In 2009, he was on the local committee for the 37th International Forestry Students Symposium (IFSS) in Indonesia. There were many environment programs included in this event, such as: lecture forums, fieldtrips, excursions, and conservation campaigns. In 2010, he was the chairman of the 4R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Respect) Festival organizing committee. This event was a campaign to increase youth awareness of environmental issues; it included a climate change seminar, environmental NGO expo, photography and essay competition, and theater performances of the 4R campaign.

Win is a recent graduate of St. John’s University in Bangkok, Thailand where he studied business. In addition, he studied at the top Medical College in Yangon, Myanmar, as well as Environmental Science at Mahidol University International College in Bangkok. He inherited his passion of environmental preservation and conservation from his father who works at WWF (World Wildlife Fund). Win is an active and enthusiastic youth who engages in work related to conservation by bringing youths together to fight climate change issues that result to biodiversity loss. He does this through persuasive presentations and seminars given at schools and universities. He loves outdoor activities and encourages youth to take part as well.

 | What is the role of the TUNZA Youth Advisors?

 

  • Assist the UNEP National Focal Point/Subregional Network on better ways of engaging young people by:

i) advising on the development of programmes, events and publications for young people, and UNEP's youth strategy;

ii) advising on the perspectives of young people on issues of sustainable development. 
    • Promote youth engagement with UNEP by:

i) informing young people in your country about, and facilitating participation in national and subregional network, UNEP's Tunza programmes, events and publications for young people (including helping organize the programme the UNEP Tunza Subregional Youth Conference and the UNEP TUNZA Global Youth Gathering), and the implementation of the TUNZA youth strategy; 

ii) informing young people about, and facilitating participation in, UNEP's TUNZA wider activities and policies.

    • Facilitate youth input in local, national, regional and international environmental fora by:

i) advocating for the views and activities of young people at local, national, regional and international environmental fora (including both regular and special sessions of the UNEP Governing Council, UNEP TUNZA International Youth Conference and UNEP TUNZA International Youth Gathering). 

    • Contribute to the development of UNEP's publications by:

i) making suggestions on, and contributions to, the development of the TUNZA Magazine

ii) promoting the use of TUNZA: Acting for a Better World
