Planetary health is the foundation of all health

Speech prepared for delivery at the 88th World Assembly of the World Organisation for Animal Health

To end the three planetary crises of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution that threaten our peace and prosperity, we have to understand that human, animal and planetary health are one and the same. Illnesses that jump from animal to human as a result of degraded natural environments and unsustainable use of animal resources drive this message home – COVID-19 is the most devastating example.

We need a One Health approach. And we need to increase the focus on environmental health in the One Health approach – because planetary health is the foundation of all other health. This is why member states passed a resolution on environment and health at the UN Environment Assembly. Why One Health is such a key part of UNEP’s medium-term strategy. Why the approach is embedded in our nature and chemicals and pollution workstreams.

We can do more to promote transformative actions that target the root causes of nature’s destruction. This is why we welcome the opportunity to join as a member, the Tripartite Alliance of WHO, OIE and FAO and to deepen our bilateral partnership with OIE. I particularly appreciate the collaborative spirit with which the OIE team engaged with UNEP on Antimicrobial Resistance and wildlife health. UNEP can bring its networks and assets to the table. Data and science. Networks with ministries, multilateral environmental agreements we host, youth groups and so much more.

This year, the international community can do a lot to increase the health of the planet. At the UN Food Systems Summit, where we must set course to radically transform food systems. At the biodiversity COP, where we must secure critical protection for nature and the services it provides. At the climate COP, where we must set new commitments that reduce our collective risks.

We can secure human, animal, and environment health. But only if we if we address them together and do the work together.

Thank you.
