Since the establishment of a South-South Cooperation (SSC) coordination unit in September 2005, UNEP has adopted a broad strategic approach that focuses on conducting internal and external consultations to promote the integration of SSC arrangements in the work of the organisation and also in developing strategic partnerships and alliances in support of capacity building and technology support activities.
A major component of this strategic approach entailed the development of a comprehensive set of strategic and operational guidelines which now serve as the principle reference document for guiding the integration of SSC in on-going and proposed activities.
To support this implementation of SSC, UNEP has been holding regular and targeted consultations, discussions, workshops and briefing sessions with various UNEP divisions, regional offices as well as relevant individual staff to promote the adoption and systematic application of the SSC guidelines and integration of south-specific approaches
Specific approaches have included liaison with UNDP Special Unit for South-South Cooperation, other UN agencies, relevant MEA Secretariats, regional cooperation mechanisms and on-going South-South
Cooperation initiatives to establish strategic partnerships, develop joint activities and synergies
in advancing SSC in support of UNEP’s capacity building efforts.
UNEP has also embarked on development of a Clearing House Mechanism (CHM) for the BSP and SSC to serve as a global mechanism for the exchange of a wide range of information on available technologies, expertise, experiences, opportunities, best practices, methodologies, advisory services, training particularly in countries and regions of the South. The Clearing House Mechanism (CHM) will include facilities to access relevant information from databases and websites for collaborating partners.
