The
Global Sports Alliance (GSA) is one of UNEP’s main
partner on sport and the environment.
UNEP has worked GSA since it was established in 1999 to
organize the Global Forum for Sport and Environment, to
support the Nature and Sport Camp in Nairobi, Kenya and
to promote the Ecoflag Movement – a global drive that
seeks to increase environmental awareness and action in
the world of sport.
UNEP and GSA also organized the Sport Summit for the
Environment in Aichi, Japan during EXPO 2005. UNEP
currently has a Memorandum of Understanding with GSA on
the above mentioned activities.
GSA is a Japan-based non-for-profit organization that
works on promoting the linkages between sport and the
environment. GSA runs the largest online database on
best practices on sport and the environment – a platform
for sports federations, sporting goods manufactures,
event producers and sports enthusiasts to determine
their roles in increasing environmental action and
awareness in sports. The database highlights a broad
spectrum of environmental action in sports to educate
and promote the public on the linkages between sport and
the environment. It has several branches in countries
around the world. The work of GSA is mainly carried out
by volunteers from all sport disciplines who are
committed to the environment.
