2012 YOUTH OLYMPIC GAMES
From the 13 to 22 January, 2012, Innsbruck, Austria played host to the 2012 Youth Olympic Games. The games saw over one thousand athletes between the ages of 14 to 18, representing over 60 countries coming together.
As well as taking part in the games itself, the athletes also had the opportunity to participate in a Culture & Education Programme designed to raise their awareness of the Olympic Values and address topics including skills development, well-being & healthy living, social responsibility and expression through digital media. As part of the programme, UNEP aimed to educate and engage participants through a host of interactive sessions and a dedicated kiosk where athletes learned about a wide range of environmental issues affecting their daily lives.

World Conference on Sport and The Environment
The International Olympic Committee, in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Qatar Olympic Committee, will hold the 9th World Conference on Sport and the Environment from 30 April to 1 May 2011 in Doha, Qatar. Under the theme of “Playing for a Greener Future”, the Conference will assess the environmental success stories of the Olympic Movement; reflect on future challenges; and explore new opportunities of mainstreaming the environment in the world of sport.

Global Forum for Sport and Environment (G-ForSE)
2010 has been a year filled with international (sporting) events. From the Vancouver Olympic Games in February; the EXPO 2010 in Shanghai from May to October; the FIFA World Cup from June to July; the Youth Olympic Games in August 2010 and the Commonwealth Games in October, the year has been full of excitement and adrenalin fuelled entertainment for sports enthusiasts.
Alot has also done on “greening” sport events in 2010. This includes UNEP’s engagement with the Indian Premier League, the UNEP-Puma Campaign on football and the International Year of Biodiversity and the work of the alternative energy commissions of the motor sports federations. The sporting goods industry has also played a part in integrating environmental considerations in their operations. Several sporting good companies have developed environmentally friendly sports apparels and kits for teams that participated in the World Cup.

Global Forum for Sport and Environment (G-ForSE)
Representative from 46 National Olympic Committees from Africa meet in Nairobi to discuss how they can promote environment and sustainable development in their countries.
The Continental Seminar on Sport and Environment, is being organized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and hosted by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), in Nairobi, Kenya on 6 - 7 November 2010 will bring together 90 representatives from 48 Nation Olympic Committees.
The Seminar will review the role of sport as a vehicle for sustainable development in Africa and how sport events and activities could be used to promote solutions to environmental, economic and social problems in Africa.

Play for the Planet 2009
As the whole planet starts gearing up to the World Cup in South Africa, more than 2,000 youth will gather in Nairobi to Play for the Planet from 21 November to 6 December.
The 'Play for the Planet: Play for Peace' competition, now in its second year, is organized by non-profit organization Mavuno Michezo with support from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the International Olympic Committee and Bayer East Africa.
It will bring together youth aged 14 to 18 from across Nairobi for a series of football games and environmental activities. Indian Premier League Goes Green

Play for the Planet 2009
The 2009 Play for the Planet, organized by UNEP in cooperation with Mavuno Michezo and in partnership with Bayer, was held from the 17 to 18 October at the coastal town of Mombasa, Kenya. The event brought together corporate partners, schools and young people who planted 25,000 trees and participated in a corporate challenge as well as promote environmental awareness
Following great media promotion by Capital Fm radio station, the weekend’s activities kicked off at the Bamburi Haller Park where UNEP Play for the Planet has been reclaiming the rocky quarry, rejuvenating it into a conservancy filled with exotic wildlife. Bamburi cement provided land at the quarry where 10,000 trees were planted.
The event also got overwhelming support from the British council and General Motors. This was soon followed by planting 3,000 trees in the city streets. The event was graced by the Town clerk of Mombasa who announced that the Municipality had pledge 2 million trees to the Billion tree campaign which will be planted by the end of 2010.

The Global Forum for Sport and Environment (G-ForSE)
The United Nations Environment Programme in collaboration with the Global Sports Alliance of Japan and Volvo will be hosting the 2008 Global Forum for Sport and Environment (G-ForSE) in Alicante, Spain from 4 to 6 October 2008.
The Forum, whose theme is - Climate Change: Changing our Carbon Footprint – will address the connection between sport and climate change and to review actions by sport organizations to reduce their carbon footprints. The Forum will be held in conjunction with the launch of the Volvo Ocean Race.
The 200 participants of the Forum will come from sports organizations and federations, sports personalities, the International Olympic Committee, manufacturers of sporting goods, United Nations agencies, NGOs and government representatives.

UNEP's Climate Neutral Network Member PUMA to Spearhead Exciting World Cup Initiative
PUMA, the first major sportswear company to join the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)'s Climate Neutral Network, announced plans on Thursday to offset the CO2 footprint of PUMA-sponsored national football teams taking part in the Football World Cup this summer in South Africa - a total of 336 players and officials.
The announcement was made in front of hundreds of top business and environment leaders attending the Business for the Environment (B4E) Summit in Seoul, Republic of Korea.
This offsetting initiative marks an important step towards meeting the company's commitment to becoming the first carbon neutral sports-lifestyle company.

PUMA and UNEP Launch Public Service Announcement to Support Biodiversity Initiatives
Today PUMA unveiled a series of advertisements featuring Cameroon footballer Samuel Eto'o. The campaign is part of the 'Play for Life' partnership, which PUMA and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) formed in January of this year to support the 2010 International Year of Biodiversity.
The purpose of the partnership is to raise awareness about habitat and species conservation among football fans and the general public during worldwide football events, including the FIFA World Cup 2010.
The campaign will be seen globally in print, out of home, in-store and on-line and will run through the end of 2010. With 12 African football team sponsorships to its name and a history of innovation with Africa, PUMA is uniquely positioned to help drive this effort with UNEP.

Punjab Cricket Association Hosts First-Ever Green Cricket Match
The Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) hosted cricket's first-ever carbon neutral match on 9 April at the Mohali Stadium in Punjab, India.
The green game was organized by the Indian Premier League (IPL) as part of the 'Batting for the Environment' initiative, which was launched in March in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
Punjab Cricket Association has ensured that the carbon footprint from the game was kept as low as possible by offsetting an estimated 580 tonnes of match-related CO2 emissions. Approximately US£6133.73 ($10,150) will go towards supporting an internationally recognized residual biomass project in Rajasthan, India.

UNEP Releases Report on the Sochi Olympics
At the invitation of the Government of the Russian Federation and in partnership with the Sochi 2014 Olympic Organizing Committee, a UNEP expert team undertook a mission to Sochi from 28 to 30 January 2010 to assess preparations in the lead up to the games.
The mission produced a report, which was prepared on the request of the Russian government, presenting key findings and recommendations.
The mission involved site visits along the construction path of the combined road/railway and other sites in the region (including the Biathlon venue and Olympic Village in the mountain cluster, Gasprom complex, Rosa Khuta). It also involved discussions with the Russian Railway Corporation, Olympstroy, the Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee, and the administrations of the City of Sochi, the Sochi National Park, the Biosphere Reserve, NGOs and local experts. The mission visited several installations (including the leopard breeding centre, tree nursery and zoo) presented as mitigation measures to the effects of various Olympic and tourism projects on the environment.

Indian Premier League Goes Green
The launch of the Indian Premier League's (IPL) third season tomorrow night in Mumbai marks a milestone in cricketing history - the IPL is going green.
Tipped to become the single largest environmental awareness campaign in the Indian subcontinent, Batting for the Environment is a partnership between the IPL and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
Led by UNEP Goodwill Ambassador Sachin Tendulkar, team captains from the Deccan Chargers to the Kolkata Knight Riders will make a Green Pledge to save the planet at the opening ceremony.

Sachin Tendulkar Honoured by the United Nations Environment Programme
Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar has been named a United Nations Environment Programme Goodwill Ambassador.
The appointment, made by UNEP Executive Director Mr. Achim Steiner in Mumbai, allows one of the world's greatest cricketers the opportunity to use his legendary popularity to raise public awareness and harness support for environmental action in India and the world.
Mr. Tendulkar has been a strong supporter of the work of the UN, having lent his voice to a UNICEF campaign in India, raising awareness about the importance of personal hygiene.

Vancouver promises Green Games as Winter Olympics kick off
As the 2010 Winter Olympics kick off in Vancouver, the athletes will not be the only ones going for gold - the Game organizers are also shooting for the stars with a series of ambitious environmental goals.
The Vancouver Organizing Committee (VANOC) have been working with the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) over the last three years in a bid to enhance the event's environmental performance and increase green awareness.
The Olympic organizers have focused on minimizing the event's carbon impact, with clean technology choices, an expanded transport system for the city, green construction for the Olympic venues, and a commitment to offset direct carbon emissions from the Games.

Indian Premier League to partner with UNEP for a unique green initiative
The Indian Premier League (IPL) today committed to a strong vision of green growth by launching a partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). Under the new initiative, the IPL will green its cricket league and bring environmental awareness to millions of cricket fans around the world.
Through this long-term partnership with UNEP, the IPL joins the ranks of global events, such as the Olympic Games and the FIFA World Cup, which are working with the UN Environment Programme to green their events.
The new partnership, which kicks off with the India Premier League that will be played over 45 days starting on 12 March, is a first-of-a-kind initiative undertaken by any sporting body in India. UNEP will advise the IPL in its commitment to green its sport events, spread environmental messaging to fans through its star players and green its merchandising.

World Cup Nations Team Up Against Climate Change
As the climate talks kick off in Copenhagen, key football nations are teaming up for the planet for the biggest sport event of 2010.
More than half of the countries that have qualified for the 2010 FIFA World Cup have committed or pledged to offset the emissions of their teams' and officials' flights to South Africa for the competition.
Argentina, Brazil, Cameroon, Chile, Cote d'Ivoire, England, Greece, Italy, Japan, the Republic of Korea, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Nigeria, Serbia, USA, Uruguay and host country South Africa are among the squads determined to score green goals for the environment in 2010.

Olympic Champion Usain Bolt Lends Support to Sustainable Tourism Initiative
Olympic champion sprinter Usain Bolt took a break from the track on Friday to launch the Zeitz Foundation's Long Run Initiative, which aims to create and support ecotourism projects around the world.
The Long Run Initiative's pilot project in Kenya is a 50,000 acre solar and wind-powered conservancy in the Rift Valley region with a negligible carbon footprint.
"Although I am known for running short distances, I want to inspire others to join me in the long run. Anything worth doing is worth striving for and the future of our planet is the ultimate cause", said Bolt, the Zeitz Foundation's Cultural Ambassador.

UNEP launches Shanghai Expo Green Report
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) released today its assessment of Shanghai's efforts to organize an environmentally-friendly Expo 2010 that aims to benefit not only the 70 million expected visitors but also leave a green legacy for the city's over 20 million residents.
Achim Steiner, UN Under-Secretary-General and UNEP Executive Director, said: "Since the first Expo in London in1851, world fairs have given visitors a taste of the future and the progress of human societies. The Shanghai Expo follows this historic legacy and is offering us a glimpse of a greener future."
"Like many rapidly developing cities, Shanghai faces enormous challenges in ensuring fresh air, clean water, sustainable energy, efficient transport and waste reduction for its population. The experiences of Shanghai in handling these issues provide valuable examples and lessons for other cities in China and worldwide," he added.

UNEP Signs Agreement To Help Green The Sochi 2014 Olympics
In an effort to green the Sochi Olympics in 2014, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Russian Olympic organizers to help and advise them on making the Games environmentally friendly.
At the signing ceremony on 5 June, Theodore Oben, Chief of the UNEP's Outreach Section, said: "I am sure the memorandum signed today will not only be a written commitment, but will guarantee that during the preparation and staging of Sochi 2014 great strides are made in environmental protection in Sochi and the Krasnodar Region," said
Dmitry Chernyshenko, President and CEO of Sochi 2014, added: "Signing this important Memorandum will help ensure Sochi 2014 is able to introduce Green Standards to every level of the Games' preparation and will ensure that the Organizing Committee continues to work with international environment experts to support this."

Sporting Events Rally Behind the Climate Neutral Call
It used to be "Swifter, Higher, Stronger" but in the future the Olympic motto may well include "lower" at least as it relates to carbon and curbing climate change.
From the 2014 Sochi Olympics to the 2010 FIFA World Cup to be hosted by South Africa to Norway's premier car race starting tomorrow - major sporting events around the globe are increasingly looking at neutralizing their carbon footprint as part of overall "greening" strategies.
These tournaments are the latest participants to join the Climate Neutral Network (CN Net), an initiative led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to promote global action and involvement towards low-carbon economies and societies.
