Nature and Sports Training Camps
UNEP and the Global
Sports Alliance (GSA) launched a Nature and Sports Training Camp in Nairobi
in August 2001. The camp provides leadership training on the environment, culture
and sports to children from the biggest slum in Kenya (Kibera). Since 2001, over
10,000 children have been involved in basic training on the development of community
environmental activities (recycling, clean ups, etc) and on various sports activities
(soccer, tennis, basketball, etc).
Through the Michezo programme, UNEP intends to create similar camps in other
developing countries. UNEP will also continue to support the Mathare Youth Sports
Association, a winner of UNEP’s Global 500 award in 1992, which is another
programme for slum children in Nairobi.
