UNEP Sports and Peace Initiative for Kenya

21 June - 21 September 2008

The Sport and Peace Initiative aims to use sport as an avenue to promote and foster peace. The initiative helps to create a conducive environment for interaction by young people affected by the recent post election conflict that sparked off in many parts of Kenya. It enables young people to meet and express their feelings and accord them an avenue where they can work together and co-exist peacefully.

The theme of the initiative is Play for the Planet: Play for Peace. This theme expresses the promotion of environmental protection and peace through sport and is in line with the UNEP long term strategy on Sport and the Environment endorsed by the UNEP Governing Council in 2003.

The initiative engages young people mainly from informal settlements but also from other parts of Nairobi in sport environment and peace building activities from early June - soon after World Environment Day - to World Peace Day celebrated on 21 September 2008.
