About the Conference
UNEP and the International Olympic Committee organized the sixth World Conference on Sport and Environment in Nairobi, Kenya from 9 to 11 November 2005.
The Conference, which is one of the key activities under the UNEP's long term strategy on Sport and the Environment brought together 372 participants from over 90 countries to discuss the connections between sport, peace and the environment. The participants were from National Olympic Committees, International Sports Federations, the Sporting Goods Industry and non-governmental organizations. The Conference also attracted organizers of Olympic Games in Turin, Beijing, Vancouver and London as well as the organizers of the FIFA 2006 World Cup in Germany. It was also attended by top athletes from Kenya and other parts of Africa including Frankie Fredericks from Namibia and Kenenisa Bekele from Ethiopia.
The participants had plenary presentations and discussions on the environmental activities of the Olympic Movement and environmental efforts by organizers of major sport events (the Olympic Games and the 2006 FIFA World Cup). The Conference was used to encourage sport organizations to mainstream environmental issues in their activities.
Participants also had an opportunity to visit the UNEP leadership training programme for children from the Kibera Slums and Langata in Nairobi.
