UNEP organizes an annual event entitled Play for the Planet. This event brings together hundreds of children from schools and communities in Kibera, to engage in sport and environmental activities, such as clean ups, environmental awareness seminars and tree planting. This is a project that started in the year 2003 with Nairobi University, attracting over 4000 participants at the time.
Play for the Planet took place on Saturday 25 March 2006 from 10 am to 5 pm at the UN Recreation Centre, and the event was attended by about 200 children from the Kibera slums. The event included mini-soccer (7-a-side), athletics, lawn tennis, tug of war, volleyball, and fun events. In addition to the planned sports activities, there was entertainment by a talented dance troupe from Kibera and a raffle with some great prizes, including holidays and restaurant vouchers, recreation centre membership passes, gifts from Diani Flowers and the UN Commissary. Other sponsors include UN Sacco, Safaricom, Aquimist Ltd, Kenya Commercial Bank, Nairobi Sports House, Sports Station, Acharya Travel Agency, Bunson Travel, and others. The UN Recreation Centre allowed us to use its facilities for the day without charge.

A large number of UNEP staff members and their families attended and participated in the fun day and helped raise funds for a good cause.
