UNEP and FIM signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in December 2006.
Through the MoU, both organizations agreed to work together to promote the incorporation of environmental of environmental issues in the events of FIM and to support the monitoring of environmental programmes in the preparations and staging of motorcycling competitions. FIM also agreed to participate in the commemoration of annual World Environment Day celebrations by creating visual information materials for spectators and issuing press releases to sensitize their audience about environmental issues.
FIM is the world governing body for the motorcycling sport. It was founded in 1904 to promote the motorcycling sport and its ethical values in the world. FIM was one of the first sport organizations to embrace the concept of sustainable development. In 1992 established a working group to promote environmental awareness in motorcycling sport. In 1994, FIM published it “Environmental Code” with important recommendations for protecting the environment during motorcycling events. FIM is currently involved in several environmental programmes including a programme that seeks to reduce the carbon emissions from its activities.
