2nd Magglingen Conference on Sport and Development: International Highpoint in the Year of Sport
Around 400 personalities from 60 countries including high-ranking decision makers and top athletes met in Switzerland from 4 to 6 December for the 2nd Magglingen Conference on Sport and Development . The event marked the culmination and end of the International Year of Sport and Physical Education 2005 .
The 2nd Magglingen Conference was opened by the Swiss President Samuel Schmid. Among the participants were Boris Becker, former German tennis ace and holder of several Wimbledon titles, the long distance runner Tegla Loroupe of Kenya , the four-time Olympic gold medalist in speed skating Johann Olav Koss and hurdler Nawal El Moutawakel, the first Moslem woman to win an Olympic event. Among the government ministers present were the Russian Minister of Sport and former international ice hockey great Vyacheslav Fetisov. High-ranking representatives from international sports organizations, the EU and the UN were also at hand, as well as members of the scientific community, the private sector, the media and non-governmental organizations active in sport and development
The Conference also took stock of what has been achieved so far in the sphere of sport and development, exchange experiences and knowledge, present examples of path-breaking ideas and develop an action-oriented agenda for the future with the aim of ensuring that the enormous momentum generated over the past years continues and grows.
The conference was sponsored by Adolf Ogi, Special Adviser to the UN Secretary-General on Sport for Development and Peace, the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, SDC, and the Federal Office of Sport, FOSPO.
The conference programme included a plenary meeting with keynote speeches and panel discussions as well as workshops on selected themes. One of the highlights was the “Marketplace“, where more than 30 organizations presented concrete projects and initiatives. With the “Magglingen Call to Action 2005” and the Roadmap 2006“ two future-oriented documents were elaborated. They were included in the report on the International Year of Sport and Physical Education 2005 to be submitted to the UN General Assembly by Mr. Ogi.
