Programme UNEP are organizing a high profile two-week continuing
education course on Sustainable Communities in collaboration with
Asian Institute of Technology in Bangkok, Thailand.
What is the focus?
The course aims to bridge the knowledge gap between academia, local
and central government in the field of sustainable urban planning.
The course focuses on sustainable urbanisation highlighting the
functional and holistic approach and the linkages between urban
planning and climate change. Sustainable urban planning can reduce the
impacts on climate change by reducing the negative impact of
transport, energy production and consumption as well as reduce major
environmental issues facing cities such as natural disasters, floods,
drought and air quality.
The Sustainable Communities Course gives practical examples and
methods how to use city planning as a tool for sustainable
development. The course is a combination of interactive learning
techniques; keynote lectures, case study presentations, dialogue
opportunities, field visits and workshops, providing improved
understanding and capabilities on sustainable urban planning in terms
of urban stock, environment, social assets and culture.
Who should apply?
Sustainable Communities-course is indented for experienced local and
central government officials engaged in policy creation, management or
infrastructure development. The course welcomes also experts in the
fields of architecture, urban planning and engineering from
universities and education centers from North and South. Participants
having successfully completed this course will be awarded a Diploma.
How to apply?
The online application form will be opened on 4th March 2008 on the
website provided below. Deadline for applications is 2nd April 2008.
Participants are expected to pay their travel and other expenses and a
tuition fee of 700 EUR. Candidates from developing countries and from
countries with economies in transition can apply for a full or partial fellowship.
