National Sensitization Workshop on Sulphur Reduction in Lome, Togo

A National Sensitization Workshop on Sulphur Reduction took place in Togo on 17-18 June 2008 in which Benin and Nigeria also participated. The workshop recommended the introduction of vehicle age import restriction for Togo as older vehicles destined for Benin and Nigeria were being imported through Togo, and the immediate reduction of sulphur in diesel in Togo and Benin from current levels of 10,000ppm to 5,000ppm. Further sulphur reduction in Togo will be pursued by a national inter-ministerial task team due to financial implications. The workshop also recommended the harmonization of fuel and vehicle standards at ECOWAS level. Benin and Nigeria will hold national consultations on the issue. UNEP will follow up the implementation of the recommendations in the sub-region.
