A media sensitization workshop on leaded gasoline phase out was held in Algiers, Algeria on 23 May 2012. The sensitization workshop also targeted senior government representatives and key stakeholders in the oil industry. The event was co-organized by the Ministry of Land Planning and Environment, the Ministry of Energy and Mines and the Partnership for Clean Fuels and Vehicles’ Clearing House.
The workshop was opened by the Chef de Cabinet of Ministry of Land Planning and Environment, Mr. Abdelkader Benhadjoudja. Also in attendance was the General Director of Hydrocarbons in the Ministry of Energy and Mines, and high profile industry representatives including the CEO of NAFTAL. The Partnership for Clean Fuels and Vehicles was represented by the Clearing House, the African Refiners Association and Afton Chemicals.
A phased approach to the elimination of leaded gasoline, based on completion of refinery upgrades, was presented as follows: June 2012 for the Arzew Refinery, July 2013 for the Skikda Refinery and March 2014 for the Alger Refinery. Alternatives to lead in fuels that would enable early phase out of leaded gasoline in Algeria were discussed.
