Algeria, Tunisia and Morocco participated at a sub-regional workshop held in Rabat, Morocco on 12-14 April 2010 to share country experiences in implementing cleaner fuels and vehicles policies. Mr. Andre Douaud, a vehicle expert from CCFA, France also attended the workshop that was organised by the PCFV and the Department of Environment, in the Secretariat of State for Water and the Environment of Morocco. Morocco is the first African country to offer low sulphur fuels exclusively – 50ppm sulphur and below – after upgrading the Samir refinery. Participants had time to visit the refinery and were taken through the modernisation program. The workshop recommended the formation of a regional network for exchange of information including regulations within the three countries.

The need for information exchange across borders, particularly with Europe was proposed. Participants also agreed to hold regular regional meetings, with the next meeting proposed in Algeria next year. As Morocco had already implemented cleaner fuels, the country reported that the next focus would be on cleaning the vehicles, starting with vehicle emission testing programs. The workshop came immediately after media sensitisation activities in Morocco to publicise the introduction of cleaner fuels (unleaded gasoline and low sulphur fuels) in the country.
