UNEP Executive Director’s encourages Yemen on
its lead phase-out, by 2008, efforts
Yemen, one of the 16 remaining countries to phase out leaded
gasoline received applause from the UNEP Executive Director,
for completion of activities under a Memorandum of
Understanding signed in 2005. The Agreement came to a close
at the end of 2007.
Yemen, who the UNEP Executive Director commended for remaining committed
to the phasing out of lead in 2008 as planned, published its Report –
“Towards leaded Gasoline replacement in Yemen” in January
2008. Also completed was a refinery study as well as a blood lead
testing program. Both the report and the study have been shared with the Yemeni
Parliament in a bid to obtain support and funding for Yemen to go fully unleaded.
