Global Fuel Economy Initiative Launch for Latin America and the Caribbean - Mexico March 2010
Climate change mitigation: The importance of passenger vehicle standards

In order to set the stage for policy makers and other stakeholders in Mexico and throughout the region to analyze the need for vehicle standards and consider the best practices around the world, the National Institute of Ecology (INE) in Mexico convened an international workshop on passenger vehicle fuel economy and greenhouse gas standards. The workshop was supported by the Global Fuel Economy Initiative (GFEI) and by the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT).

The objective of the workshop and the GFEI was to support development of policies to improve the fuel efficiency of cars in LAC, in order to cut CO2 emissions and oil dependency. The workshop discussed the economic rationale and options for intervention to promote fuel efficiency and examine how market conditions in LAC, and particularly Mexico, determine the way regulatory standards for new cars and other instruments for fuel economy might be designed and further clarifying the role of the GFEI and its partners in this endeavour.

With 90 plus people attending, there was a great deal of interest and enthusiasm for the workshop. The opening panel was very strong, with all the key decision-makers, all making strong statements to work together towards a standard. The presentations addressed all of the key issues of concern. The Latin American panel generated a lot of discussion and brought out a broader range of tools and tactics to reduce climate emissions from the transport sector.

The presentations are available on the ICCT website: http://www.theicct.org/information/workshops/climate_change_mitigation
