The 2nd national seminar on diesel fuels and technology for better air quality - 'Ecofuel ' Seminar II: Diesel and Technology for Health (Seminario Ecombustible: Diesel y Tecnologia a Favor de la Salud) was held on 20th June 2009 in Asuncion, Paraguay. The event was organized by Petrobras Paraguay, the Secretary of the Environment of Paraguay (SEAM), the Global Alliance Against Respiratory Diseases (GARD) Paraguay and the Municipality of Asuncion.
The seminar had more than 400 participants and the discussions focused on air pollution and related health effects and sulphur reduction in fuels. Medical experts and pediatricians from South America were invited to the seminar, these included Dr Jaime Guggiari (Paraguay), Dr. Maximiliano Gomez (Argentina) and Dr. Eduardo Macedo (Brazil). They discussed human health impacts, including respiratory illnesses and increased frequency in bronchitis and asthma.
New technologies, cleaner fuels and vehicles and the continued absence of vehicle emission standards in Paraguay, and problems arising from this, were also discussed. As representative of the PCFV, Gianni Lopez, Director of the Centro Mario Molina Chile (CMMCh), talked about the experiences in Chile and the activities of the PCFV in Latin America.
