Helping a village
Fatima Shams, BAHRAIN
Once upon a time there was a small village near the sea. The people were really nice, but they didn’t care about their village. It was very dirty, they cut most of the trees and set them alight in order to build houses, they threw garbage on the beaches, and the air was unclean and unhealthy. These problems were all caused by the people who lived in this village.
There was a young smart girl who lived in this village, her name was Lamees. She loved her village so much and wanted the best for it, but she wasn’t happy because they destroyed their environment. She knew what was happening but she had no idea how to solve these problems.
One night in her bed she tried to sleep, but she couldn’t, she was imagining what her village would look like after 20 years. She imagined it would be much worse than it was now-the dirt everywhere, the air, sea, and land badly polluted, people dying, people suffering from diseases, people were scared and sad, the whole village was destroyed! This image frightened her so much.
She wished that people helped each other to make the place clean and beautiful like a small baby, and then she imagined something different. The village had a lot of green land with many trees, clean air, blue sky and a clean sea, children were healthy and happy, playing around safely.
She felt that this wish was possible but it needed a lot of work and effort. It could be done by planting many trees, cleaning the village very well, no more throwing garbage anywhere, no more fires and the most important thing was that the people had to care about their village.
Suddenly, she jumped from her bed with this brilliant thought saying to herself: Why don’t I make the people do these things? So she created an action plan, by designing some brochures and posters and putting them all around the village, inviting the people for meetings at her house to describe the problems of the pollutions at their place.
They understood what they did and they were willing to help her, so she divided them into groups, each for planting trees, cleaning the beach, streets, others for fundraising through social activities, to encourage people to love their environment.
Of course at the beginning it was a hard job to do but later people started to like it and all of them participated in this project. Finally Lamees's wish came true! People were so happy, they didn’t believe that they did something that was impossible before, but when they worked together this wish came true. In the end, the people elected Lamees to be the President of the Environmental Council of the Village.
After two years that village became like a small heaven, which makes tourists comes there all the time.
