Making a difference

Kate Charters and Millicent Burgraff, AUSTRALIA

Attending the UNEP Summit in Japan has changed Sarah and Kate’s lives positively and I hope they continue to be inspired to work on environmental issues. After the last conference Sarah, Kate and Millicent have worked to promote the UNEP Children’s Conference within Australia.

At the last UNEP Children’s Summit it was mentioned how little publicity the Conference received and to present the Petition to as many Leaders as possible and the girls have done so and raised the profile in Australia and Australian environmental issues both within Australia and globally. Millicent even presented the petition on behalf of the 3 girls to the Queen when she was at the Commonwealth Games.

Kate, Sarah and Millicent, are still on the TUNZA website as examples of what children can do and were congratulated by Klaus Toepfer by letter for their article in Our Planet magazine on Australian environmental issues. They have presented to schools, the Mayor, the local Council and Parliament here and have had many meetings with our Minister for the Environment and Deputy Premier. They have received now over $7000 from the State Government, Local Council and local Traders Association to make our local area plastic bag free.

They are going to the zoo to find out about how Australia is helping endangered species, arranged by the Minister for the Environment, and will be shown around by the Conservation Manager there. Sarah received the honorary mention in the UNEP International Environmental Photographic award.
