It's The Little Things That Count...

Lisa Gayatri, PARAGUAY

I am Lisa Gayatri, from Paraguay. The second day after I arrived in Paraguay from the 2006 Tunza International Children's Conference, my Science teacher asked if I could give a talk about the conference including all the projects that the delegates had done.

On the day of my talk, I took some materials that had been given to us by UNEP, my scrapbook that I had created of the conference and photos. My classmates were very impressed with all the projects and many of them wanted to prepare their own projects. I told them that they should prepare themselves for the youth conference since many of them are older than 14 years old. They liked the idea a lot and I hope that they will work on their projects.

My grandmother had planted a tomato plant in our garden which we are taking care of. It has started giving us many fruits now. We eat it in salads and they taste much nicer than the ones that we buy in the supermarket. We are not using any chemical pesticides and it does not have many insects. I have also planted some small bushes around my garden and they make my house look nicer.

My brother and I asked my father to change the bulbs in our house so as to save energy. The rooms in our house now have more energy saving bulbs. We also remind my mum to use her basket when she goes to the market so that she does not carry the vegetables home in plastic bags.

I have written an article on the conference and UNEP for the Mother Support Newsletter, which is published in 4 languages. When it is ready it will be mailed out to many people around the world. It will also be on the WABA website.

I have also started to read more on the environment in English but I hope I will get more articles to read in Spanish and share with my friends. I am also spending time in the garden with our dog Blanco and our guinea pig, Simona.
