Planting Trees in Nairobi's Endangered Karura Forest

Naylee Nagda, KENYA

Karura Forest is a lung for Nairobi, providing oxygen for the densely populated and congested city of more than 3 million people. This forest is adjacent to UNEP headquarters in Africa.

Studies by various national environmental organizations indicated that indigenous forests had been declining at a rate of 5,000 hectare each year. Many animals are losing their habitats, there are Syke’s monkey, rare bush pigs and sunni antelopes and hundreds of bird species and other small organisms. Forests!

I went to plant trees in Nairobi’s endangered Karura Forest. The tree planting was sponsored by Tropical Farm Management Kenya Limited. I was invited by them to plant with them 1000 trees, on 14th October 2006. I hope everyone is trying to achieve the goals we agreed on at the conference.

Together we can achieve!
