Every July, youth and adults gather in Sopris Park in Carbondale, Colorado
for Sun Dependence Day. Sun Dependence Day was inspired by the famous
Independence Day Celebration on the 4th of July. Solar Energy International
believes true independence comes from local self-reliance and sustainability.
Folks from all over the state gather for renewable energy fun. Children
make solar cookers and run through the solar powered mister to cool off.
All enjoy the free solar cooked food samples that are distributed throughout
the day. Solar ovens and cookers are on display, all cooking up scrumptious
food in anticipation of the early evening potluck.
The park is lined with educational booths promoting everything from purchasing
wind power to the local utility and to mixing up earthen plaster. There
is always a good band to enjoy, with sound powered by the sun. It all
comes to a head when the whole community comes together for the potluck.
We close the event by raffling off a solar oven.
