mysaThis Clean Up the World event was held in Korogocho slums along Mathare River on 14th September 2007. The aim of the clean up was to sensitize the communities living along the Mathare River on the effects of dumping waste in the river, and to identify strategic dumping points for each community to avoid littering anywhere especially on the river. 869 participants from three premier league clubs from Kenya Football Federation, four primary schools, six community based groups and community members participated in the event. We collected over 3 tonnes of waste that had been dumped along the river, planted over 200 trees and opened blocked drains.

During the event we also sensitized the community on reducing the use of plastic bags, conserving water and explaining how a poor environment can lead to poor health. The clean up was five hours, and was widely enjoyed and appreciated by both the participants and the community. We hope that next year we will have sponsorship for the event to make a stronger impact, and that this exercise develops into a sustainable project in the community.

We as MYSA are happy to be associated with the global campaign of cleaning up the world.
