Biodiversity Home            Key Facts         Challenges

Loss of Habitats

Habitats are the places where animals and plants live. These can be rivers, lakes, forests, coral reefs, deserts, savanna's, mountains, even the garden. Deforestation, forest fires, pollution and agriculture contribute to the loss of habitats and the species that live in them. Roads and railways can block natural migration and feeding routes.

Other causes of species extinction:

Overpopulation

Over-fishing

Use of pesticides

Draining and filling up of wetlands

Pollution

The conversion of habitats into fields or urban areas
