Key Facts About Biodiversity

Biodiversity Home            Key Facts         Challenges

There are more species on the earth than stars in the universe! 1.000.000.000.000.000.000 species (mostly insects) versus 200.000.000.000 stars.

The importance of many of these species is not yet known: scientists have only recorded 1.75 million species on our planet. Humans are but one of the species on this planet.

It is estimated that between 150 and 200 species become extinct every day.

Currently, governments spend 1 US$ per person a year on nature reserves. At least 50 US$ per person is needed each year to save endangered species.

Once a species is lost it is gone forever.
