Water

Key Facts          Challenges        Make A Difference

Water is often referred to as "the Essence of Life". Without water, nothing would survive. For decades, Its seeming abundance, camouflaged the scarcity of this vital resourse. Sewage, industrial waste and agricultural runoff flow and fill rivers and lakes with chemicals and other waste.

Soil erosion caused by poor agricultural practices affects rivers, lakes and dams. Improper irrigation methods have also led to underground water being used up very quickly.

Sulphur and nitrogen oxides from industries are released into the air, after mixing with water vapour they often fall back to earth as acid rain or snow, thousands of miles away from the source. Oil spills and untreated sewage damages our oceans and seas. Oceans are a source of food and attract tourists. However, they are being used by humans without consideration of the effect their actions have, on more than 120 species of mammals and other forms of life that live in the oceans.
