Environmental Mandate

The ITU works actively to support the achievement of the Millennium Development goals by promoting the central role that information and communication technologies (ICTs) play a in the global fight to reduce pollution while increasing environmentally-friendly economic development. ICTs are an increasingly important catalyst that spurs economic growth and social equity. ICTs allow for more efficient agricultural production, diversity and distribution. They offer the possibility of delivering basic health services to those in dire need living in areas with little or no access to healthcare facilities. They can extend the reach of educators allowing them to bring knowledge to the most remote corners of our planet.

Environmental Activities

The ITU’s activities assist member states to implement national strategies for sustainable development by facilitating:

  • Access to remote sensing technologies and communications networks permit more effective monitoring, resource management, mitigation of environmental risksIncreased access to/awareness of sustainable development strategies, in areas such as agriculture, sanitation and water management, mining, etc.

  • Greater transparency and monitoring of environmental abuses/enforcement of environmental regulations

  • Facilitating knowledge exchange and networking among policy makers, practitioners and advocacy groups
