Environmental Mandate

The mission of the ECLAC in the area of environment and human settlements is to translate the vision of sustainable development in Latin America and the Caribbean in operative public policies and that take into account

  • The environmental problems that exist in the countries of the region as well as the priorities expressed by the governments

  • The role and comparative advantages of ECLAC in the promotion of the sustainable development in the region of Latin America and the Caribbean

  • The role of other major actors — including other agencies of the United Nations system, bilateral development banks and donors — with a view to avoiding potential duplicities and taking advantage of synergies

Environmental Activities

The work of ECLAC in the area of environment and human settlements is articulated in four areas:

  • Evaluation of sustainability in Latin America and the Caribbean

  • Public policies and pursuit of a global environmental agenda

  • Economy and environment

  • Poverty and the environment
