Environmental Mandate

The core UNIDO objective to advance industrial productivity enhancement links very closely to MDG Goal 7: Ensure Environmental Sustainability, Target 9: Integrate the principles of sustainable development into country policies and programmes and reverse the loss of environmental resources. UNIDO assists institutions and industries of developing countries and countries with economies in transition in building capacity to combat the loss of natural environmental resources at the national level and to effectively address emerging environmental issues of a trans-boundary, regional and global nature.
UNIDO’s work aims to enhance the diffusion and transfer of environmentally sound technologies (EST), through investment and technology promotion, quality and productivity, small business development, energy and different sectoral activities, on the one hand, and environmental and energy management on the other, to offer truly integrated service packages for developing countries and countries with economies in transition.
UNIDO is an implementing agency of the Montreal Protocol Multilateral Fund (MLF). In this role it has assisted approximately 1,250 industrial firms employing some 145,000 workers through its technical cooperation activities carried out in the context of the Montreal Protocol.
